what does the pitch of a prop mean? does it change your boats performance?

I am currently running a 26 pitch cleaver on my 28ft scarab. It has a blown big block with a super chiller. the boat weights around 4,600 pounds. many people say i need another prop. what should i get to get the max performance out of my boat? the motor is making 750 hp

  1. the pitch is the angle of the blades. and its like changing the rear end gears in a car. boat engines have a WOT(wide open throttle) rating. where with the throttle wide open the rpm should be to the high side of that rating to get the best performance. changing the pitch one way or the other by one will raise the rpm by roughly 100. but since your boat is not stock you should take it to a prop shop and let them figure it out. going too much either way can hurt your engine. and running that prop, if it is wrong, can hurt your engine too.
  2. The max Rpm should be reached at Wide open throttle if low than lower the pitch to reach the max Rpm it will make the boat go faster.
  3. The prop its pitch is the way in inches the prop travels in one revolution in sand. In water there is a slip factor! A cleaver prop is a surface prop and runs higher rpms and gives the boat stern lift. A propellor with a higher rake gives a boat more bow lift. Depending on the boat hull design, weight, engine(s), rpm range, type of drive, top speed or aceleration and others a prop type is selected. It is not just the pitch but the form, angle and shape of the blades that gives speciffic results to the boat hull while on plane.
