Performance Boat Shop

My boat just stopped feeding power to the propellor yesterday?

i was taking it slow and all of a sudden it stopped feeding power. The boat still moves slowly but the engine just revs when i try and accelarate. I was told is was a broken HUB now here is teh question, if i have a spare propellor is it as simple as changing the one that is currently on there? do i need additonal parts? can i change myself? thanks all

  1. right, your prop can be re-hubbed at a prop shop, shouldn't be too expensive. prop change just take off prop nut and washer, pull the old prop off, install the new. Little bit of grease on the propshaft helps keep it from freezing up on there. Depending on who made your motor you might see a castillated nut with a cotter pin or a lock washer with tabs folded down over the nut -- bend those tabs back to remove the nut.
  2. Sounds like a spun hub. A prop repair shop can fix that, you can't. You can easily remove and replace the prop yourself. If you have a spare, even better. An adjustable wrench that will fit the prop nut, a screwdriver and pliers to bend down locking tabs (on some models), remove the cotter pin, unscrew the prop nut. Pull off old prop and thrust washer, put a bit of grease on the shaft and replace with spare or rebuilt prop and reverse assembly. Sometimes you mangle the cotter pin and need to replace it and sometimes you need some shim washers if putting on a different prop.If you use the rebuilt one, it's much simpler.
  3. If we are talking about an outboard, there is a nut on the shaft. Just remove the nut slide the existing prop off and the new one on.
  4. You might have a small motor with a shear-pin, as opposed to a thrust hub, but you should be able to put the spare on yourself. Good luck!
  5. If it is an inboard with attached transmission, you may have problems with the shaft coupling. Crawl into the engine room and take a look while the engine is idling dead slow ahead.
