Power Boats Knowledge Base
What physics topics can be discussed concerning power boats? I am working on a physics project in which I have to discuss different topics (in physics) that deal with power boats. I can go into detail on the friction of water, velocity, etc., but I was looking for more in-depth details and more interesting concepts. Physics is not my strongest subject, so any intellectual information would be helpful.
How can I protect myself from power boats when I'm in a kayak? I frequently kayak in waterways filled with everything form large ships to small boats and jet skis. I know the obvious: kayak whistle, lights at night, avoid busy channels when possible, etc. What I'm wondering is, what is the best way to take aggressive defensive measures when I'm about to be mowed down by a mullet headed jackass with a beer coozy in one hand, fishing pole in the other and his knee on the helm of a motor boat, who is aimed right at me but isn't looking or listening? How can I even the odds and create a visible, potentially destructive deterrent, so those idiots will avoid me?
What size Power boat for US to Caribbean trip? I am looking to buy a power boat (NOT sail) with the intent of sailing between the US (NY/NJ-FLA) and Puerto Rico, St Thomas, St. Lucia, etc. Obvious a cabin cruiser of sorts. My question is what is the minimum size boat is good for this excursion? Plus any ideas on specific boats based on personal experience will earn my vote!
Exceeding your boats maximum horse power rating? I have a jon boat made of fiberglass and wood. The maximum hp rating is 30hp but i recently got a 40hp given to me. I can add to the rear transom with epoxy and wood and im fairly confident i can renforce the the transom alot. I also recently added a 100 pound platfourm to the bow. I was wondering if i can put the motor that is 10hp more than the rating if i renforce the rear transom. Now i know that i can always put a throtle stop on the motor but i was hoping to keep it at full power, with out breaking my boat.
How detrimental is power boating (ie skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing) to smaller bodies of water? A lake in my county is being studied as to whether it is a canidate for an 'ecozone' in which a cetain section of the body of water would be designated for only boats power by electric motors or less. This would encompass maybe 5% or less of the entire body of water. It is a free country and pleasure boaters have as much right to be on the water as everyone else. But it is frustrating to see an otherwise nice lake be churned into slop.
What type of power boat is required to cross the Atlantic of the Pacific? I know you can sail across the Atlantic or Pacific in a 30-40foot sailboat and many people have done it in much smaller craft. My Question is: How about a power boat? What length of boat would you need to attempt a trans-Atlantic crossing? Obviously, fuel would be the primary concern. How much fuel capacity would this boat require? Also, I would just like to throw in there: What price range are we looking at for a boat of this type?
How much realistically to own a power boat? Hi I am planning to buy a motor boat for recreational use, 4 berth for up to £6 - 8 k. I know very little about boats so will bring someone along who does know about them. What I need to know based on occasional weekend use, how much should I budget for - mooring fees, water licence and anything else such as insurance? Many thanks Steve
What's the best way to power boat stereo with 2 amps? I currently have 2 amps running 8 6x9 speakers. I have 2 AGM batteries but I try to just use 1 to run stereo when the boats not running (switched). The battery doesn't last very long at all so I was thinking about installing 2 6v golf cart batteries in place of battery #2 to get more runtime. Is there a better way? 12v deep cycle? Help
Should I buy a power boat or sailboat? I want to buy a power boat that will sleep four people. With the price of gas maybe a sailboat would be better. My concern is taking a sailboat on smaller lakes and rivers. Also, I have never handled a sailboat before. Which is better?
Looking for specs on a Formula 233 power boat? Purchased a 1981 Formula 233 power boat with a single 260 horse power 350. Boat has only 600 total hours on it, but I know nothing about it - weight, amount of fuel carried - nothing. I found a 233 club, but to get any answers, you had to join. It was free, but they wanted my e-mail address AND my password. It is wise to give out you address and you password?
can I turn my sail boat into a power boat? I like the weekend living set up that a sailboat provides. I have a 25' sailboat with a swing keel. Will it perform like a power boat on lakes and rivers? I am aware it will be a slow cruiser, which is ok, but I am concerned about stability (ie: rolling, tracking, ect) with the keel up when underway. Thanks!
What are the best brands of runabouts power boats to buy used? Where is the best place to look? My husband and I are searching for a used runabout (for cruising fresh waters and skiing/wakeboarding). we want to finance it so it cannot be more than 7 years old. what are the best brands to buy used (most reliable)? Our budget is no more than 25k. We want at least 20ft but would consider 18ft if right boat. Where is best place to look? At dealers or on internet? I cannot seem to find anything decent on craigs list (just old boats).
When you're cruising against the wind with your power boat, do the waves represent an extra resistance? I live near a very windy and gusty harbour, and I want to build my own commuter boat to go to work with. The winds here are often blowing at about 30-50mph. I imagine that it will be a good idea to have a very aerodynamic, low upper body for my boat to ensure I don't get blown backwards while going forward at full speed. But I wonder, too if the waves that are being blown over the surface and are coming straight at me when going against the wind represent an extra resistance for which I would have to make some clever allowances. Does anybody know? Thanks very much.
What is the side of the hull on a power boat called? If I were to add a rib along the bottom of the hull and up the side, what is the side referred to as? I know the side of the hull above the waterline is the freeboard, but what is the whole side of the vertical component of the hull called?
Is it safe to put a solid cabin on a tiny fishing power-boat? I'm commuting across a harbour with a 3-meter aluminum boat every day, and I am considering to build a cozy, fully enclosed structure onto it to protect me from the elements and the engine noise. Trouble is, I've constructed this in CAD, and it looks pretty top-heavy. But I don't think it is, as it's going to be all aluminum and PVC windows. I'm only worried about stability when the wind comes from the side - is this too small a boat to put a cabin onto? Thanks.
My engine started making a power boat noise? I was in the middle of my 4 hour trip and I noticed the noise. I usually hear nothing when it idles but it is a pretty loud humming noise. I can't hear it on the outside, just inside of the car. It gets louder when I accelerate but if I maintain a 90 KM speed, I can't hear it anymore. There's no check engine lights on my dash and the engine temp was normal. I will bring it to the mechanic but does anyone have an idea?
My boat just stopped feeding power to the propellor yesterday? i was taking it slow and all of a sudden it stopped feeding power. The boat still moves slowly but the engine just revs when i try and accelarate. I was told is was a broken HUB now here is teh question, if i have a spare propellor is it as simple as changing the one that is currently on there? do i need additonal parts? can i change myself? thanks all
Did NBK japan toy boats make a power boat with a sail and mast with green light at the top of the mast? The boat is 9 1/2" long x 3 1/4 wide x 1 3/4 deep the mast stands 8 1/4 tall the wires that run up the mast to the light are the same as is all the wires in the boat, it runs on two C cell batterys, the top deck has no nail holes were a windshield would have been atatched, the stitching on the sail is very well done it looks factory made to me the hole where the mast go's thru is perfect and there is a small block of wood on the floor of the boat that the mast fits in and could have only been placed there when the upper deck was removed if any one knows of this i would be very greatful thanks. Ron
horse power in timber boats? Have built a timber ski boat want to know what horse power restrictions i have Have built a wooden ski boat 16 ft modelled of a replica the bottom has had 4 coats of fibre glass the old boat had a motor with about 185 horse power am i able to go bigger
Why is my boat not receiving power? The battery is charged, everything is connected correctly, but the boat gets NO power. I really don't get it! The boat (for what it's worth) hasn't been run in about 2 months.
Can a trolling motor power a pontoon boat? I am interested in buying a "family" boat - just something to get us out on the water, enjoying the sun, etc. However, some of the local places (lakes in the state forest) allow only electric motors - no gasoline engines. In other words, a trolling motor. Of course, this is fine for a row boat or bass boat (for fishing), but can a trolling motor push a pontoon boat through the water? Thanks! Please - boat experts only -- not just guesses. I'm already guessing :) SMILE!
How do I hook up a marine (boat) stereo and provide power using an AC Source? I want to put a boat stereo in my outdoor barbecue island. I know that I need to convert AC power to DC power, with sufficient power to drive the speakers. I was planning to use a laptop power supply cord since that would have more power than a typical AC/DC converter. Will that work, and will I need to get some type of adapter to get that wiring to hook up to the stereo?
What size diesel pump is necessary to power a 20-ft displacement hull jet boat? I am building commuter boats at the moment for the Otago Harbour in southern NZ, the more the merrier. Latest idea: Get a displacement hull and power it with a diesel pump, to get a jet drive (good for crossing the sandbanks at low tide, and to allow the boat to sit on the mud if the water recedes). But just what kind of pump would work? I need to get the displacement boat up to about 8 knots.
