Used Power Boats Knowledge Base
What are the best brands of runabouts power boats to buy used? Where is the best place to look? My husband and I are searching for a used runabout (for cruising fresh waters and skiing/wakeboarding). we want to finance it so it cannot be more than 7 years old. what are the best brands to buy used (most reliable)? Our budget is no more than 25k. We want at least 20ft but would consider 18ft if right boat. Where is best place to look? At dealers or on internet? I cannot seem to find anything decent on craigs list (just old boats).
What sort of batter(ies) should I use in my power boat? For a powerboat that is about 25ft in length, what type of battery should be used? Currently our boat has 1 deep cycle and 1 regular battery (both Interstate, if that matters) but I've been told by someone today that I should use 2 deep cycle batteries instead. Keep in mind that we have a depth finder, dvd player and flat screen, stereo etc and we use these when we anchor in the water overnight, so we are using the batteries at night for long periods of time.
How do I hook up a marine (boat) stereo and provide power using an AC Source? I want to put a boat stereo in my outdoor barbecue island. I know that I need to convert AC power to DC power, with sufficient power to drive the speakers. I was planning to use a laptop power supply cord since that would have more power than a typical AC/DC converter. Will that work, and will I need to get some type of adapter to get that wiring to hook up to the stereo?
used power pack for 1971 60hp johnson boat motor? where can I get a used part for a johnson outboard motor? It worked fine for awhile then I had to tap the box to get it to actually crank, now it will only turn over. Can you rig it any other way?help , the new part is unbelieveably high and I need it for church camp sooon.,...... horseflysplat@yahoo.com
New to Solar:Can I use solar panels designed for ATV batteries to power my garage lights? I've found some $50-80 solar panels for 15 watts of power used to keep ATV or boat batteries charged. Will these panels be able to be used to power my on-at-dusk light bulbs or will I have to buy other adaptive equipment? This would be my first solar panel purchase and I'm wanting to be able to add panels as I can and as I learn how to use them effectively.
Could a boat motor be used on a Go Cart? I am trying to build an off road go cart, I was wondering if I could use a boat motor to power it. First of all is this even possible. Second is the motor to heavy?
How much realistically to own a power boat? Hi I am planning to buy a motor boat for recreational use, 4 berth for up to £6 - 8 k. I know very little about boats so will bring someone along who does know about them. What I need to know based on occasional weekend use, how much should I budget for - mooring fees, water licence and anything else such as insurance? Many thanks Steve
What power tilt trim setups will work with a 1975 75hp Johnson Stinger 2 Boat Motor? I have a manual tilt Johnson 1975 (possibly 1976) 75hp Stinger 2 (it was originally orange) boat motor. I'm looking to add a used power tilt/trim setup to make things much easier. What all do I need and what models and years of Johnson/Evinrude will interchange so it will be a direct bolt up? so just to clarify, I need one from a 1975-1979 3cyl johnson.
Pratical use of automobile engines in boats ? what are the differences for rust, corrosion protection? I'm always dreaming up wild ideas, and I had one for a new breed of high performance personal watercraft - the Tube boat. I want to put a V-8 engine into a very stretched Seadoo-type watercraft, and just use a simple propeller shaft off the back of the engine, with maybe a simple clutch mechanism to engage/disengage the power to the shaft. Anyway, that all said, I know boats use automobile-type engines, but use special water-cooled exhaust manifolds, etc. What other Boaterizing is done to an automobile engine to make it into a "marine" engine? Any special gimmicks to prevent the corrosion of dissimilar metals inside the motor? If I chose to use a straight car engine, with the watercooled boat manifolds, how long would a motor last without any other mods? Obviously a boat style cooling system as well would be installed <duh>. So other than radiator, coolant, and exhaust manifolds, what else would normally be changed?
How would this change your life? You have just invented the "Perpetual Motion Machine". It is small and compact but it is very strong. You've hooked it up to an electric generator and found that it can make more electricity that a gasoline powered generator. Your perpetual motion machine runs clean and doesn't use any fuels and it doesn't produce any exhaust, so it doesn't hurt the environment. Your invention is used to power cars, boats, homes, business, everything. There is a death warrant out on you from every oil producing middle eastern country and the state of Texas. You can make your machine for under $50 and sell each unit for $1,000. It is projected that you will earn over $500 billion dollars in the first 5 years. You build a house near Bill Gates and he calls you his "rich neighbor". Think before you answer, then tell me, how would you change your life?
What's the best way to power boat stereo with 2 amps? I currently have 2 amps running 8 6x9 speakers. I have 2 AGM batteries but I try to just use 1 to run stereo when the boats not running (switched). The battery doesn't last very long at all so I was thinking about installing 2 6v golf cart batteries in place of battery #2 to get more runtime. Is there a better way? 12v deep cycle? Help
Using AMP to power boat speakers? Is it possiable to use an AMP without a head unit. Plug in any device with RCA jacks to it ? I'd rather buy an AMP than a aftermarket stereo for space reasons.
Can i use a power inverter to charge a12 volt battery while using it? I have a party barge with a boat motor that doesn't have a generator. Can I hook up a power inverter to charge the 12 volt battery via a battery charger at the same time I am using the inverter for 110 volt usage? Would the 100 amp inverter use more power to run the charger, than the charger would be able to charge the battery?
What material should we use for my balloon powered boat? The maximum length of the boat is 30 cm. The boat is travelling through a canal which is 13 cm wide and around 3 meters long. The boat requires a type of material that is light, but can float very well on water. My partner suggested we should use plastic with coated wax. By the way, the materials must be recycled / non-manufactured materials.
What Kind of Power Steering Fluid would you use for a 1985 Four Winns Boat? We have a 1985 Four Winns Horizon 195. We are getting ready to take it out this year and need to replace the power steering fluid. Does anyone know what kind of power steering fluid it takes, such as, the brand and type? Thanks! The engine is a MCM 190 MC Mercruiser. There is fluid in the power steering unit at the right front of the engine, and it's a yellow color. The fluid is low and I'm just curious as to what kind of power steering fluid that is.
Would a muscle powered hybrid make sense for a boat's drivetrain? I am planning to build a muscle powered commuter boat, using pedals, as on a bicycle. Now one of the challenges I face is transferring as much of the human motion as possible to the propeller. I am not sure how much of a loss through friction there is when using steel gears or other setups, but I just had this idea pop up in my head instead: What if the pedals only drove an electric motor, which generates DC electricity, which is then transferred straight to an electric motor driving the propeller? The advantage of that would be that I could also feed solar or wind energy into the whole thing, somehow (that one needs some more brooding over, I know). But would that make at least a little bit of sense, or is this hopelessly inefficient?
Wanted to buy a used boat for under 100k. Want to live on it with family, could it be all electric with a? Wanted to buy a boat that my family of 5 could live on full time. I have two homes but would like to live on the ocean for a while. I live next to the gulf of mexico and plan on going from Texas to Florida but staying on the gulf of mexico side. Was looking at a sail boat with a diesel or electric engine. I have a budget of 100k cash. I am completely unfamiliar with boats but saw some used boats and they fell into my price range. What would be a good model that would meet these needs? I saw that many boats had windmills that generated electric power. I was wondering if there were sailboats with electric motors. I thought that with enough battery capacity they could be charged from wind generators or solar panels. Does that type of boat even exist? Also I need to learn about sailing. Where are classes for this?
Can I use a riding mower engine, as an inboard engine to power my 16foot boat? And where can I find a diagram of the shaft to propeller and rudder?" I know this has been done. But I have never seen how it would be set up. I have a 15 horsepower craftsman engine with a vertical shaft. I'm thinking belt from engine shaft to a vertical shaft mounted to the inside of the transom, chain to a vertical shaft mounted to the outside of the transom down to a 90 degree gearbox to the prop
so i have a solar power battery charging question...? I guess the best way would be to explain what i want to do.. I'm looking to buy a small boat and power it with an electric trolling motor. I'm pretty sure that they use a 12v battery for their power source. Now what i would like to do is hook up a solar panel on the boat that will contantly be charging the boat. So now i have a few questions.. 1.Will a regular car battery work? or do i need a deep cycle battery? 2. How large of a solar panel will i need, for it to take about 20 hours or so to charge as i intend to use the boat daily, or if i never used a full battery in a day say i only used 50% or so what rating should i look for when buying the panel to keep the battery charged daily? 3. Is it possible to leave the solar panel hooked up while i'm using the battery? I am basically looking for a simple inexpensive as possible self sustainable setup that will allow me to never have to worry about charging the battery
Where can I find a 42ft yacht? I've looked on many sites and I'm still having trouble finding the boat I want. My requirements are: 42ft length 20ft beam 4 staterooms Under $900,000 Power-boat, not sail New or Used This isn't a "wanted ad", I'm just looking for some help finding the right web-sites.
Is it possible for a Shrimp Boat to be powered strictly using electric power from batteries? WWII Diesel/Electric powered submarines were able to submerge and conduct underwater attacks against enemy ships while depending upon their batteries for all the navigation and propulsion fo the submarine, I was wondering with the high costs of fuel, is it would be practical to switch the diesel engines over to all electric power instead, anyone have any suggestions or something they can add to this? The WWII subs could operate underwater on battery power alone for up to 12 hours before they needed to surface to recharge their energy drained batteries. Thanks There is no set time between charges, each boat would have its own independent power supply built in, that would recharge the batteries, when one set was running dry, the energy source would automatically kick in and recharge that set and so on and so forth. This energy source works, I operated my rather large home using it, but its not patented, when you patent an invention, it automatically becomes public knowledge and I chose not to take this route, however with the high costs of fuel these days, I was considering approaching large fleets of shrimp boat owners with it, so they could still earn a nice profit for their hard work and their fuel costs would be slashed to zero. Hopefully, the end results would be they could sell their seafood for a much cheaper price than the competition could, and corner the market. The end user, the consumer would have a field day with such low prices and seafood is great food to eat, 24/7. Solar and wind power are out, pure energy is in. Thank oilfield trash: People laughed the Wright Brothers right out of the room, didn't they, and who had the last laugh my friend? Many people often crique an invention or the person that invented it before they are forced to eat their words. Laugh all you wish, and I will be laughing all the way to the bank. Thanks you seem to think that the only sources of energy are found in what currently exists today, why not allow your imagination to open up and explore and discover other sources of energy, this is what seperates the 9-5 workers from the billionaires, you have a brain, don't you? Try using it, sometime! It might even surprise even you what you can accomplish with it! Thanks
Solar Panel - DC motor - Rated Power ? Functionality ? I have a solar panel 7.5V 1.25W 150mah, connect 2 in parallel to power a RC boat. The boat use to run on 6cell battery pack - 7.2V 1800Mah. The dc motor requirement based on the provided battery pack, i assume would be 7.2V and rated at (7.2V * 1.8Amp) = 12.96 Watt. Would two of my solar panels run this DC motor ? are my calculations or understanding correct ? do lend a hand dear ''world'' Yes i assumed the motor was at 1.8Amps from the 1800mah spec the battery had, my bad. Sorry for the english mishap, was in a rush. I really do not know how to find out about the motor spec, it is a rc boat i purchased and now planning to use solar to run it, in other words removing the battery and only relying on solar energy. pretty confusing this is! i connected the solar panels but the motor did not respond. i suppose you are right, i need more then 2 piece of them solar panels.
Can you connect wires from 2 different breakers to get more power?? I have a boat with a 100 amp panel and main breker. I have a shore power wire plugged into a 50 amp breaker at the dock. There is a spare 50 amp breaker. Can I plug a second wire into that breaker and run it to the same 100 amp main panel. Will the current divide. I know I can add a second panel box and divide up the circuts. But then I'll have to add more switches for use with the generator when I unplug from shore power.
Matching Horse Power With Size Of Boat? For small, row-boat-size boats (12 to 14 feet), how does one go about choosing an outboard with the right horsepower? Keep in mind this boat will be used for lake fishing for one or two adults.
Can you use something like Edelbrock Total Power Package on a boat? Can you use something like this on a boat? http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/power_package/power_package_main.shtml It looks like it is designed for idle to 5,500 rpm. It should be built better then the average boat heads. Since it is Edelbrook it should be built stronger. So I don't understand why a person could not use it? The manifold should be lighter then the factory. It just seems like a better way to go. I am wondering if the heads exhaust ports would match? Can any one think of why it could not be used or why you shouldn't?
How fast did the boat travel under power, under sail, and under both power and sail? This is from Page 226, #24 of Fundamentals of Technical Mathematics (2nd edition): Solve this system for I1, I2, and I3. A sailboat leaves a harbor at 0600 hours (6 a.m.) and motors under power with no wind. At 0800 hours (8 a.m.) the wind picks up, and the skipper shuts off the boat's engine and sails until 1200 hours (noon), covering 22 miles. At this time the skipper decides to use both power and sail to make more progress. The boat arrives in port at 1800 hours (6 p.m.) after covering a total of 64 miles. If the speed under power and sail equals the speed under power plus the speed under sail, how fast did the boat travel under power, under sail, and under both power and sail?
Does a boat emit carbon dioxide, or any other gases that contribute to global warming? ? Okay, so does using boats contribute to global warming? seeing as you use gas to power MOST boats? Im creating a satire.. would this be "funny" and work for a satire? : -this is supposed to be a picture: a polar bear sitting on a SMALL ice berg, with a quote bubble saying "is it just me, or is this ice sheet getting smaller by the minute?" WHILE, in the background, there is another polar bear driving a boat in the artic ocean. The statement im trying to make is that as humans, we say we care about global warming, but we continue to use all the main contributors that are polluting the air, causing global warming. And because of global warming, the polar bears and becoming an endangered species and are losing their habitats. The suggestion for change in this satire would be to cut back on the amount of pollutantt gases we allow to enter the atmosphere, so that the polar bears survive. Does that make any sense at all, and would you consider that a satire?
used outboard selection? Having totally lost my grip on reality I have decided to enter the used boat market.I want a 16-19 ft closed bow runabout.my question here involves the engine. Now I know each hull should come with a power rating but i want to start looking at motors now so is there a rule of thumb or a general idea as to max OUTBOARD power that i should be shopping for or investigating? I would like about 85-115 hp 2 cycle carburated, i am looking on craigs list for cheap builders.I figure MERC/Mariner has best support but are there any real DOGS to stay away from.also book reccomenditions would help too
How can I make a candle-powered boat? For homework, I'm supposed to figure out how to make a candle-powered boat that is smaller than 8x4 (inches). Anyone have any idea how to make a boat move by only using 'tea candles?'
Where can I get a 12 volt to 3 volt power adapter? I want to use a electronic 3 volt device from a 12 volt car battery so it will run much longer. I am going to install a air bubbler in my boat (the portable type with a few feet of hose and a air stone on the end to be placed in any minnow bucket and keep them alive). They sell a 12 volt aerator for $40 but I am trying to go with the cheaper $10 style so I can just pitch it when it no longer works and replace it without taking a $40 loss each time. Where do I buy one?
Can someone explain how to power a trolling motor? I need to use a trolling motor with a small jon-boat on a lake (no gas engines allowed.) I have seen trolling motors at Wal-mart and on the internet for around $100. Okay - here is my question -- do I need to buy a separate battery, or is the battery included in the trolling motor housing? I also see rechargers - do those connect to battery terminals on the trolling motor, or is the battery a separate item? Thanks!
How big of a motor do I need on a boat to water ski? I would like to buy a used motor boat for some family fun on the water. There are a few boats with a 50HP motor for sale in my price range but I'm skeptical that it's enough power to water ski with. Is a 50HP motor enough, or should I look for something larger? Thanks Also... The size of the boat would be a 16 to18 footer. Dad is 200lbs... Mom says she's 115lbs but she's really 130, (Don't tell her I said that), 1 average teen, and 2 little ones ages 5 & 6.
Diagram to fit a cigarette lighter socket in a boat working off a car battery . How do I do it? I want to put in a cigarette lighter socket in my boat so that I can plug in a Garmin GPS 12 navigator. That way I can use the boats car battery instead of 4 x AA batteries wich I would continually have to replace(only 24 hrs power). I could have the GPS system running continually as back up. I need a simple diagram on how to fit this cigarette lighter socket or simple instructions. Nothing too technical or you will lose me.
What cork like object can I use to put at the end of a cigar tube? My 11 year old son is doing a school project and he is making a steam powered rocket boat and we have it completed except for the cork. I cant find a cork anywhere except for wine bottles and I want to use something else that is similar in a corks shape except it has to fit in a tube about 2.5 inchs thick.
using purple power degreaser????? I am using PURPLE POWER DEGREASER to clean the vinyl seats in my boat and it says to dilute it 10:1 with water. I'm wondering if anyone has used it and if there is a need to dilute it. Thanks,
Mercruiser 470 not getting power to Ignition Coil? I have a 1982/83 vintage Mercruiser 470 that is not getting any power to the Ignition Coil. I used a multimeter tester and found that no power is going to the coil. The last time the boat ran was when she was winterized in October 2007. What should I check to correct this problem of no power going to the Ignition Coil? Thanks
What is the best method to power some christmas lights on my boat.? I have a 26 foot cabin cruiser. Want to put a lot of christmas lights on outside for a parade. I don't have any generator. I was thinking of an inverter off my battery but, I will be running at over 1,000 lights. Can I buy a very small generator like one used to power outdoor tools. I think I saw one once that was very small and like 100 dollars. What is my best option. I don't have a permanet place to mount a generator. It would have to be sitting on swim platform as to keep fumes away from cabin.
looking for amp to power a 10" sub with minimal power consumption? This is a setup on my boat, so I'm looking for an amp that will draw the least amount of power but still give me enough rms power for my 10" sub. I'm currently using a clarion apx-480m but the only thing it powers is the sub so it's a bit of overkill, and the power it consumes drains my 2 batteries quicker than I would like. I'm looking at the Pyle PLMRA200 with a max power usage of 15amps and 200W rms, http://www.pyleaudio.com/itemdetail.asp?brand=&cat1=Marine%20Audio&cat2=Amplifiers&model=PLMRA200. Is this a good choice, or is there a better one I should be looking at? Thanks! The sub is a bazooka 10", I think the model is sm-104 or something. It's rated for 200W rms.
